Katherine Joy Allton
May 10, 1952 - February 17, 2023
Katherine "Kathy" Joy Allton, age 70 of Sioux Falls, died Friday February 17, 2023. Funeral services will begin at (tentatively) 10:30 AM Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Miller Funeral Home 507 S. Main Avenue, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Katherine Joy Allton was born in Oak Park, Illinois on May 10, 1952 to George and Helen (Dupont) Allton. At the age of 23, the family of three moved to Sioux Falls, SD.
Kathy touched the hearts of all those who knew her. Her middle name was fitting- JOY! She truly brought joy to all those around her.
After her mother passed away in 2006, Kathy transitioned to living in a group home. Kathy worked assembly jobs at Achieve (now Lifescape), and in 2018, she “retired”, fittingly moving into Cathy House. “Retirement” allowed her to sleep in as late as she wanted and to watch Berenstain Bears movies all day long if she wished.
Anyone who spent time with Kathy knew of her love for bears- any kind of bears, but especially teddy bears. She kept a collection of bears in her bedroom, holding certain ones close to her when she needed extra comfort.
Kathy also had a passion for the circus. If only the circus came every month! She enjoyed any kind of celebration, especially birthdays, Halloween dances, Christmas parties, St. Patrick’s Day. She also enjoyed Yogi Bear Park, a few trips to Illinois to visit her cousin Sandy, to Disney World, and to the Black Hills.
Kathy will be remembered for her beautiful faith. Her radio was always tuned into a Christian station. She would enjoy watching Sunday morning services if she didn’t make it herself. She often talked about being in heaven with her mom, dad, and a long list of relatives.
She was preceded in death by her father, George and mother, Helen. She will be missed by her legal guardian, Jennifer Sammons and family, and the Lifescape staff who knew her well.
