Richard was born May 25, 1927, in Sioux Falls, SD to Eric and Alma (Johnson) Lundin. He attended Sioux Falls public schools and graduated from Washington High Senior High School in 1945. He briefly served in the U.S. Navy and, after being honorably discharged, he moved back to Sioux Falls and attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls in 1950. He graduated with a History and Economics degree. Richard had two major careers, Smith’s Jewelry, where he developed his love of time pieces and later an adjustor for Insurance Services Office (ISO).

Richard was a member of the El Riad Fife and Drum Corp and a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.
During his life, Richard enjoyed snow skiing, sailing, home improvement, playing cards and golf, especially golf. In 1990, Richard retired from ISO services, bought new golf clubs and played golf nearly every day. In 2004, God blessed Richard with a playing partner; his 3-year-old grandson, Jack. They played golf almost every day together until Jack was old enough to play tournaments; then he became Jack’s biggest supporter. Richard enjoyed all his grandchildren, whether it was having a putting contest with Anna, playing cards with Katie, watching Abby ski race or Erika performing gymnastics.
