Gerald "Jerry" Engel
March 11, 1935 - March 27, 2018
Gerald “Jerry” Louis Engel, age 83, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018 with family by his side. Jerry, son of Ramona and Louis Engel, was born March 11, 1935 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in Sioux Falls, graduating from Washington High School. He served four years in the Army flying helicopters. On September 25, 1961, he married Bobbie Moor, and raised a family in Sioux Falls.
Jerry started his career on the Sioux Falls Fire Department May 1, 1962 and spent 32 yeads with the department. He held positions of Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Operator, Captain, Deputy Chief and Chief. He finished out his career as captain until he retired in December 1993. The Fire Department was his second family and the bonds were strong enough to bind them together during off duty time as well.
Jerry loved his family and dogs and was deeply loved by them. Grateful for having shared his life and sense of humor are his wife Bobbi, whom he always called Bob, his daughter Colleen and her husband, Tim Mallatt, Brandon, SD; his son Jeff, Sioux Falls, SD and his grandson LCpl Evan Mallatt, Camp Pendleton, CA. His sister Colleen Engel, Vancouver, WA, nephews Tim (Gwen) Oest and Cheyenne Oest and niece Candee Martin. Along with great nieces and great-great nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ramona and Louis, his sister Betty Lou and brother in law Marty Martin, and sister Shirley Engel.
