Frank J. Barnett, Veteran S.F. Funeral Director, Dies

Frank J. Barnett, a funeral director in Sioux Falls for 40 years, died at 6:30 a.m. today at a local hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks.

Mr. Barnett, who was 78, suffered a heart attack at his home Oct. 29.

Born April 10, 1881 at Valley Springs, Mr. Barnett attended grade school at that place and high school at Adrian, Minn., where his parents moved from Valley Springs.

The family moved to Sioux Falls at the turn of the century and Mr. Barnett had made his home here since that time.

Mail Clerk

He served as a mail clear at the Sioux Falls Post office until 1919 when he began his career as a mortician. He attended embalming school in Chicago.

For many years, the Barnett Funeral Home was located in the 200 block on S. Main Avenue. Later it was
moved to 1392 S. Minnesota Ava. This fall the establishment was moved to the southwest corner of the intersection of 17th Street and Minnesota Avenue, where remodeling of the interior is still in progress.

Mr. Barnett was married June 15, 1904 to Ann G. Collins. The ceremony took place at St. Michaels’s Pro-Cathedral in Sioux Falls.

Nine children were born to this union, eight of whom, with Mrs. Barnett, survive.

The children are William F. Barnett, Los Angeles; Father Max G. Barnett, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Marquette University, Milwaukee; Lt. Col John Barnett, Marine Corps, Air Station, Beaufort, S.C.; Mrs. W.L. Wilkins, La Mesa, Calif.; Mrs. Gene Mattson, San Diego, Calif. and Tom Barnett, Mrs. Charles A. Barnett and Mrs. D.I. Pecaut, Sioux Falls. There are 41 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A son Jimmy Barnett was a colonel in the Civil Air Patrol and was wing commander for South Dakota at time of his death in an airplane accident in 1950. He was also a popular orchestra leader and co-owner of a roofing and insulation company here.

Gold Wedding

Mr. and Mrs. Barnett living at 735 N. Spring Ave, celebrated their golden wedding on June 15, 1954. The entire family was reunited for the occasion.

Mrs. Barnett, who was born near Madison, was chosen as the city’s exemplary mother of 1953. She was nominated for the honor by the Royal Neighbors of America. She has been a resident of Sioux Falls for almost 70 years.

Mr. Barnett was a member of St. Joseph’s Cathedral parish; Marquette Council, Knights of Columbus; Marquette Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Modern Woodmen of America and Catholic Order of Foresters.
He was financial secretary of the latter origination at the time of his death. At one time, he held a similar position in Marquette Council. He was honored Oct. 12 as a honorary life member of Marquette Council.
