Walt Baedke, 91, of Dell Rapids passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Dells Area Health Center. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 and the family will be present to greet friends at 7:00 p.m. The Interment service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday July 21, 2010 in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service for Walt will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel.
Walter W. Baedke was born on January 25, 1919 at Pomeroy, Iowa, the son of Walter and Katherine (Bangert) Baedke. He attended country schools until 1932, when his family moved to a farm near Havelock, Ia. Walt graduated from Havelock High School in 1938. He was active in sports, basketball and baseball, and worked at the Quaker Oats Co. Elevator during high school. Walt was married to Ethel Mae Klein on January 24, 1942. He left shortly after that to serve in the U.S. Army during WW II. After his discharge in 1945 he returned to work for Quaker Oats. He later became the manager at the Sherwood, Ia elevator and then the Trent, SD elevator. He became the administrator of the Dell Rapids Hospital in 1964 and moved to Dell Rapids. Walt retired in 1982. He and Ethel spent 14 winters in Arizona. Ethel passed away on September 1, 1998. Walt moved to Orchard Hills in 2009 and had just recently moved to Terrace Manor.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, the Dell Rapids American Legion Post, and the Lions Club. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son, Bruce, and two sisters.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Greg (Linda) of Vermillion; his three daughters, Katherine Jacobsen, Janet Peterson, and Donna (Joel) Doeden, all of Sioux Falls; his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his daughter-in-law, Twila Baedke of Sioux Falls; and his two sisters, Lorraine Baedke and Alice Baedke, both of Laurens, IA.
