Jerome Hunter
June 01, 1939 - December 01, 2020

Jerome died Tuesday, December 1st at Edgewood Vista in Flandreau. He was 81 years old.

Jerry was born June 1st, 1939 in Sioux Falls, to Justine and Quentin Hunter. Jerry attended St. Joseph Cathedral Grade and High School. He attended colleges in South Dakota, at Northern State College, South Dakota State University and Sioux Falls College. He pursued a journalism, business and psychology curriculum.

Jerry met his wife, Bonita Schroeder, while they were in college and raised four daughters and a son. He is a grandpa four times and has two young great grandchildren.

Most of Jerry’s business career was built around the Property and Casualty Insurance business. He worked for a major stock insurance company for four years and then went into the Agency business. He was a partner or sole owner of three different Insurance Agencies. He sold his Insurance business in 1990 and has worked part-time in the Insurance business since then, including starting an Insurance Claims Adjusting business, and a Taxi-cab Insurance Company.

Jerry’s favorite hobbies included hunting and flying. He always enjoyed hunting with his son Paul, brothers Quent and Jim, and many nephews and friends. He loved cooking and hosting during the hunting outings. Much loved dogs were always part of the party. He bought his first airplane in 1960 and sold his last one in 1995. He enjoyed his acreage on the James river, west of Sioux Falls and spent his spare time planting wildlife habitat. He also had a passion for boxing, organizing the boxing club at the Sioux Falls Boys Club and an amateur club at the Flandreau Indian School. He was a mentor to Jeffrey LeMair and helped him achieve many Golden Gloves titles and championships.

Jerry’s 20 years as a volunteer in the M-2 program at the South Dakota Penitentiary and his interest in prison reform helped prepare him for his new role as the Director of the Prison After-Care Program. In 2001, Jerry received recognition from Governor Bill Janklow for his 20 years of service in the “man to man” program at the penitentiary. Through the years he also volunteered for the Toastmasters, Elk’s Club, Optimists Club, Knights of Columbus and the Jaycees.

Jerry is survived by his daughters Joan (Steve) Ullom, Flandreau; Mary Giolitti, Phoenix AZ; Kathryn Hunter, Chester, MD; and Karen Hunter, Omaha, NE; sister Mary Lou (Loren) Scott, Howard; brother Tom (Kitty), Florida; sister-in-law Charlotte Hunter, Sioux Falls and brother-in-law Ronald Bisson, Minnetonka, MN. Jerry was preceded in death by his son Paul, brothers Quent and Jim, and sister Anne.

Funeral Mass will be 1:30pm Friday, December 4, 2020 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, with interment at St. Michael Cemetery.
