John Richard Ellenbecker, Sr.
Sioux Falls – John Ellenbecker died Wednesday, Aug 1, 2001 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born November 17, 1916 in Sioux Falls.
John was a dentist in Sioux Falls for 43 years. He received his D.D.S. from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. His undergraduate studies were done at St. John’s, and he attended high school at Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. John and Georgies’s retirement was spent partially on their dream hobby ranch in the Black Hills of SD., with the remainder spent in Sioux Falls near family.
John was a member of the Izaak Walton League, the Elks Club, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, the Sertoma Club, the American Legion, the Audubon Society, Westward Ho Country Club, and was past president of the District Dental Society. John was a Captain in the United States Third Army during World War II. He served in the Invasion of the Battle of the Bulge, the American Campaign, the European African Middle East Campaign, and the Army of Occupation.
Survivors include his wife, Georgie Ellenbecker, Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter, Barbara Fischer, Palm Bay, FL; three sons, John Ellenbecker, Juneau, Alaska, Tom Ellenbecker, Rochester, MN and Ted Ellenbecker, Sioux Falls, SD. Others include 12 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren, and his brother, Walter Ellenbecker of Sioux Falls, SD.
The funeral service and Mass will be held 10:00 am Friday at St. Michael’s Parish in Sioux Falls, with the burial immediately following at St. Michael’s Cemetery. Visitation begins 12 noon Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, Valley View Chapel. A scripture service will be held 7:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home followed by a Kings of Columbus Rosary. The family will be present following the Rosary to greet friends until 9:00 pm.
Memorial will be donated to O’Gorman High School.
