Duane Megard Killed in Action in Korea

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Megard received a telegram Friday of last week containing the sad news that their son, Cpl. Duane B. Megard, had been killed in action in western Korea October 7. The telegram came to Sherman, and was delivered to the Megard home out in the country by Agent Clyde Jones. He was accompanied to the home by Dick Winkel and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Larson.

The last letter Mr. and Mrs. Megard received from Duane was written October 6, and he told them that he had been sent to the front lines the previous day, after having served as an honor guard a the press train at Munsan for three weeks. Duane had been at the front lines on two previous occasions also. He was a member of the 1st Calvary division.

Duane was inducted into service January 18, 1951, and took his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansa. He was sent overseas May 31.

He was graduated from Garretson High School in 1946 and from State College at Brookings in 1950, receiving a B.A. degree in agriculture. Duane was a popular student while in high school, and also in college, and was known and liked by everyone. He was 22 years of age. Besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Roger, a senior in Garretson High School and president of the student body. Mr. and Mrs. Megard and Roger have the deepest sympathy of everyone in the whole community in their bereavement. Duane was the first one in this immediate territory to lose his life in the fight---
