Elmer grew up on a farm near Viborg, South Dakota. He graduated from Hurley High School in 1948, and served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years during the Korean War. During the course of his life, he farmed near Beresford until 1968 and then farmed north of Parker, South Dakota. He moved to Worthing in January of 1989. He worked in construction, and in the meat packing industries. He was last employed as a Federal Meat Inspector at the John Morrell Company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was a member of the St. Edwards Catholic Church, and belonged to the Bradshaw American Legion Post #177 in Worthing, South Dakota. He was buried on July 7, 1995 in the St. Edwards Cemetery in Worthing, South Dakota.
