"Orson Rice, a pioneer resident of this section, died suddenly at his home shortly after nine o'clock last evening, heart failure being the cause of his sudden taking away. He has been the mail carrier on rural route ever since the rural service was first established, and he made his usual trip with his auto yesterday. The car gave him trouble yesterday and the excitement affected his heart, which has bothered him some, and in the evening after lie walked home from town be lay clown on the sofa and a few moments later his son, Roy heard him Cough and gasp a time or two and when he went to see if anything ailed his father, he found him dead. The subject of this sketch was a son of Hon. Orson Rice, well remembered by pioneers. We went from Spirit Lake out into the old territory of Dakota in the sixties and has lived there ever since, occasionally returning for a visit while his family remained. He is remembered as a genial and likable man. His brother, Hon George Rice, is prominent in the office of South Dakota."
