Merrill E. Wicks

Merrill E. Wicks, 93, of Dell Rapids died on Monday, Sept. 16, 1991, at Omaha, Neb.

Merrill Wicks was born on Dec. 24, 1897, in Kamrar, Iowa, the son of George and Jennie Wicks. He moved as a child to Colton. He grew up and attended school there. In 1912 he moved to Dell Rapids and finished school. He attended a business college in Minneapolis for two years and served in the Army during World War I. On June 20, 1992, he married Laura Richter in Dell Rapids. They made their home in Dell Rapids and he worked at the Northwestern Security Bank for 42 years. He retired in 1961. His wife died in May of 1990.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dell Rapids, Eastern Star for 68 years, Dell Rapids American Legion, El Riad Shriners, Masonic Lodge 32nd degree Mason, High 12 Club, Dell Raids City Treasurer for 32 years, Clerk of Dell Rapids School District for 14 years.

He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth and one daughter, Dorothy Lauer.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Jim Wicks and his wife, Marge of Tacoma, Wash.; one daughter, Mrs. George (Janet) Patenode of Omaha, Neb.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mr. Wicks was held on Thursday, Sept. 19, 1991, at the First Baptist Church in Dell Raids with Rev. Floyd Austin officiating. Mrs. Dee Austin played the organ. Interment was in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Jack Lauer, George Patenode, Ray McKenna, Howard Brown, David Lauer, and George Patenode Jr. served as Casketbearers.

Visitation for Merrill was held on Wednesday at the Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.
