Death of Dick Keating,
Pioneer of Community

Richard Keating, one of the pioneers of Dell Rapids, died Saturday morning, February 18th, 1933, after a lingering illness.

Mr. Keating had been in poor health for a long time, but kept going as long as possible. Even when hardly able to walk he would come down town occasionally, and received several bad falls while doing so. But he finally had to give up, lingering many weeks at his home here in town, his son, Howard, staying here and taking care of him.

December 5th, 1860, he was born in Blackstone, Mass. The family moved to Decorah, Iowa in 1865, later moving to Osage, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. In 1878 he came to Dakota territory, filing on a claim near Dell Rapids, and he has since made this community his home, living most of the time in Dell Rapids.

Mr. Keating was united in marriage August 15th, 1886, to Miss Johanna Floer. To this union was born one son, Oscar Lee Keating. She died November 9th, 1890. In 1892 he was married to Lena Johnson. To this union five children were born: Charley, Laura, William, Howard and Roy. Their mother passes away March 17th, 1910.

In addition to the six children he leaves one brother and three sisters. The children are Oscar, New York; Charley, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Laura Williams, Sioux City; William, Sioux Falls; Howard, Dell Rapids and Roy of Clark.

The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday, Rev. Harold W. Wagar conducting the services. Burial was in the Dell Rapids cemetery by the side of his wife. John Hermanson was in charge of the funeral.

Relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Keating, William Keating and two sisters of Mrs. Keating. Mr. and Mrs. William Carrigg, friends of Sioux City were also in attendance.
