Romsdal Cemetery
Lincoln County,
South Dakota

1878 - 1937

Andrew M. Saugstad, born near Elvern, Norway, the eldest of six children, came as an immigrant to the U.S. in 1893, after his uncle had written him to come to his place. He lived on a farm near Yankton. He attended a country school near Yankton, as he was anxious to learn the language. He read whatever he could get his hands on. He met and married Randine. They worked for his uncle on the farm, later moved to a farm by Hawarden, which they rented. Andrew then heard of land for sale northwest of Alcester so he looked it over and decided it was what he wanted. In 1906 they moved to Norway Township, and here raised their family: Michael, Orville, Raymond, Ardis, Florence, and Lloyd. They joined Romsdal Church and he held various offices in the church. Andrew was asses or of the township and was also on the school board of Rommereim School, later named Edonwood. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 651)
