1860 - 1949
Carl Nils Birkland, or Charley, as he was known, left Norway in April 1880 and came to America. He married Bertha Roknes, who came to America in 1882. They were married in the home of Andrew Rommeriene on Feb. 19, 1887, in Criston, Ill. They lived on a farm by Wayne, Neb., for 13 years and here six children were born: Ella (Mrs. Rudolph Eneboe), Nettie, Albert, Nels, Lydia, and Clana (Mrs. Alfred Urdahl). In December 1889 they moved to South Dakota. Charley Birkland bought 160 acres of land from Will Burns for 35 dollars an acre. The farm was five miles north and one mile east of Beresford, in Pleasant Township. Here four more children were born: Carl, Edna (Mrs. Cynus Rasmussen), Julia (Mrs. Arnold Johnson), and Raymond. The children attended Pleasant Valley School. In 1908 the family joined the Romsdal Church. Mrs. Birkland passed away in 1935. C. N. Birkland passed away Nov. 9, 1949, on the Birkland farm north of Beresford.
