Accident takes Dells youth
Robert C. "Bob" Marsh, 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Marsh, Dell Rapids, was fatally, injured in a one car accident which occurred during the inclement weather Friday evening about 10:20. Four other young people riding with him were treated at the Dell Rapids Community Hospital and dismissed. The accident occurred when a gust of wind caught the car as it was descending the steep hill seven miles west of Dell Rapids on the Colton road. Snow and rain had caused a heavy build up of slush and the car got out of control when the wind caught it and caused it to roll several times before landing in the ditch. Marsh was thrown from the car, which rolled on him.
Passengers were Virgil and Verlyn Van Holland and Jay Sittig, 15, all of Baltic, Patricia Bruaas, 18, Dell Rapids. The vehicle was totally demolished. Chief Deputy Sheriff Gene Abdallah and Highway Patrolman Lyle Yeoman investigated.
Robert Charles Marsh was born Feb. 11, 1949 in Dell Rapids. He had attended the Dell rapids public school and was to have left Monday this week to enlist in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his brothers, James, who was flown home from Germany where he is stationed with the Army, Larry, USD, Vermillion and a sister Mary Jo at home; his great-grandmother Mrs. A.S. Peterson, Valley Manor, Valley Springs; grandmother, Mrs. Al Stoefen, Dell Rapids and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Marsh, Midland, Mich.
The Rev. E.S. Skaar conducted funeral services in the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 18. Pallbearers were: Virgil and Verlyn Van Holland, Randy Decker, John Schram, Jay Sittig and Steve Holmgren. Mrs. Clarence Dybvig was soloist and Mrs. John Muller was at the organ. Interment took place in the Dell Rapids cemetery with Hermanson's in charge.
