Nunda, S.D. - Vernon Lathrop, 78, died Friday at his residence.
He was born in New Hampton, Iowa, in 1902. He married Irene Hopkins Dec. 3, 1924, at Dell Rapids, S.D. The couple farmed near Baltic, S.D. until 1936, when they moved to California. They returned to Dell Rapids in 1944 and began farming. He married Violet Thompson Johnson Aug. 2, 1952, at Pipestone, Minn. They farmed in the Nunda and Wentworth area until retirement in 1973.
Survivors include his wife, Violet, Nunda; a son, Vernon Lathrop, Yankton; two stepsons, Larry Johnson, Issaquah, Wash., Lowell Johnson, Nunda; three daughters, Mrs. Ruben Auch, Scotland, S.D., Mrs. Viva Sjurek, Las Vega, Nex., Mrs. Percy Brude, Sioux Falls; a brother, Newton Lathrop, Sioux Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Bert Stomps, Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Joe Gunderson, Baltic, S.D.; 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Nunda. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Hallenbeck-Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison, S.D. is in charge of the arrangements.
