Automobile Collision Takes Lives of Two; Three Others Seriously Injured

Tragedy struck three Dell Rapids homes on Wednesday evening of last week when Carl Moen was killed instantly, and 14-months old Doris Louise Dawes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Dawes died within a short time following an automobile crash. Seriously injured in the incident were Mr. and Mrs. Dawes and Clifford Brude, who are in critical condition in the Sioux Valley hospital in Sioux Falls. Three other Dawes children, Robert, Gayle and Rita, escaped with only minor injuries.

The crash occurred about 7:30 o'clock, 3 ½ miles east of Chester when the cars driven by Brude in which Mr. Moen was a passenger, and the Dawes car hit head on at the brow of a hill. Brude and Moen were returning home from work with the Weelborg Construction crew who are working in that vicinity. The Dawes family were making an evening drive to the lake near Chester.

Last reports gave Brude's condition as critical. He has remained in a comma since the accident. He received various head and body bruises. Mr. Dawes received fractures of both legs, an arm, badly lacerated left hand and internal injuries. However, he has been given a 50 – 50 chance for recovery. Mrs. Dawes received cuts, bruises and servere shock but is said to be recovering as well as could be expected.
