Walter William Briley was born June 9, 1867 at Chatfield, Minnesota, and passed away July 1, 1951.

Mr. Briley, or Joe as he was more familiarly known, spent most of his life serving the public. As a boy he helped his gather, W.L. Briley in a general store at Chatfield. In 1883 the family moved to Dell Rapids where his father operated the Van Eps Mills. Later the family lived in Duluth, Minn. and Canton, S.D., where the father was auditor for a grain company. Moving again to Dell Rapids, Mr. Briley acted as assistant postmaster for his brother Harry. Later the father and sons, Harry C. and W.W. Briley, established a hardware store know as Briley Bros., in what is now the Grand Theatre building. It was operated for a number of years, then was sold to P. Burke and sons.

Joe then worked for a number of years as clerk in Rimes grocery department. In later years, he established Briley Bros. grocery in partnership with his brother Frank. This partnership was later dissolved and Joe served the community as a business man until his retirement in 1945.

Mr. Briley was married October 25, 1893 to Elizabeth Barbour. She and their only child, Norris, preceded him in death. Mr. Briley took a father's place in rearing his two grandchildren, William Norris, now of Huron and Thomas Allen, Sioux Falls, after their father's death. Besides the two grandson's, the survivors of the deceased are one nephew, W. Lester Briley, Ellendale, N.Dak. and three nieces, Mrs. Hollie Peterson, Mrs. Ralph Weelborg and Mrs. Ellsworth Brown.
