EGAN FARMER DIES AT AGE 64

John F. Nichols Enlisted in Army During War I – Funeral Held Sunday

John F. Nichols, resident of South Dakota since 1914, and more recently of the Egan community died last Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock at Flandreau hospital after a short illness, aged 64 years and 26 days. He had suffered a stroke on April 28.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church at Egan, conducted by Rev. C. D. Arms, and interment was made in Hillside cemetery under direction of the Orvedahl mortuary service.

John Frank Nichols was born April 9, 1885, the son of George and Sarah Nichols, at Mendota, Missouri. On October 6, 1923, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Ellnora Stinson at Council Bluffs, Iowa. Without issue from this marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Nichols adopted in 1936 an infant daughter, Azalya, who with the widow are left to mourn his loss.

He is also survived by a step-daughter, Eva May Hanson of Sioux Falls, S. D.; a sister, Mrs. Rossie Davidson, Livonia, Mo., a nephew, Virgil Davidson, living in Flandreau, a number of other nieces and nephews who live at distant points. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Henry, a sister, Maude, also a step-son, Harold, who passed away in 1932.

In 1914 Mr. Nichols came to South Dakota to assist his brother Henry in farming. In 1917 he joined the National Guard, and afterward the regular army, from which he was granted a medical but honorable discharge. He has been engaged in farming in this locality all of his married life with the exception of three years spent in a defense plant on the west coast.
