Willard was born April 24, 1929, the fifth and youngest child of Albin and Grace Ambur on their farm north of Beresford, SD. He attended the Burney School for eight years and graduated from Canton High School in 1946 as their homecoming king. He joined the Marines in the fall of 1946 and was stationed at the El Toro Marine Base in El Toro, CA. After his discharge 19 months later he attended South Dakota State College and graduated from there in 1952 with an agricultural engineering degree. In November 1951 he married his high school classmate Marlys Tysland, daughter of Arthur and Laura Tysland of Canton. They started farming in the Beresford, SD area in the fall of 1952. Willard taught a veteran agricultural class in Beresford after the Korean War. He served many years on the school board for rural schools also in the Beresford school system. He was an active member of Skrefsrud Lutheran Church where he served as President for several years. He was a Beresford Lions Club member.
