Asa was a Private in the Civil War from 1861 - 1864 according to the 1890 Veterans Census.

Asa - he was discharged from the 3rd Iowa Infantry on June 17, 1864. Less than a month later he married Emily Glazier on July 2, 1864.
While serving with the 3rd Iowa he was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, but not severely. He continued until the end of his 3-year term.

"Two old and highly respected citizens of Moody County have died within the past week. Asa Platts, of rent, aged 74 years, died last Saturday. The funeral occurred Monday and was conducted by Gen. Wadsworth Post, GAR of Egan. Ole B. Berge of Flandreau, died last Saturday at the ripe old age of 81 years. The remains were interred in the cemetery in Lone Rock Township."
