Geneva C. Bunkers, 72, of Dell Rapids, died Friday, October 14, 1994, at her residence.

Geneva C. Baumberger was born May 3, 1922, at Huntimer, the daughter of Jacob and Alice Baumberger. She grew up on a farm near Huntimer and attended grade school near Colton. She graduated from Chester High School in 1939.

On July 18, 1944, she was married to Melvin J. Bunkers at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Huntimer. After their marriage they lived on a farm until 1945 when they moved into Dell Rapids. They later owned and operated Bunkers Oil Co. in Dell Rapids.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, and D.A.V. Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister. Survivors include her husband, Mel J. of Dell Rapids; three sons: Tim and his wife Sandy, of Sioux Falls, Jeff and his wife Linda of Minneapolis, and Jerry and his wife Mary of Sioux Falls; three daughters: Mrs. Duane (Linda) Majeres of Huron, Mrs. Craig (Monica) Meyers, both of Mitchell; two brothers: Verne Baumberger of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Terry Baumberger of Colton; three sister, Loretta Felton of Lincoln, NE, Mrs. Art (Cecelia) Mergen of Colman, and Mrs. Charles (Edith) Cannon of Sioux Falls; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held on Monday, October 17, 1994 at 2 PM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dell Rapids, with interment at the St. Mary's Cemetery. A Christian wake service was held on Sunday evening at 7:30 PM at the Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Father Hal Barber was the celebrant. Casket bearers were Tom Reiff, Ken Baumberger, Jim Mergen, Steve Bunkers and Vince Schwebach.

Melvin J. Bunkers, 88, of Dell Rapids died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at Avera McKennan Dougherty Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls.

His service will be Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids.

Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery.

Visitation at Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Melvin John Bunkers was born June 20, 1919, at Dell Rapids to Emil and Leona (Full) Bunkers. He attended St. Mary Catholic School.

In August 1942 he joined the Army and served in the European Theater of Operations. In February 1944 he was wounded in Italy and received the Purple Heart. He was discharged in August of that year.

He married Geneva Baumberger July 18, 1944, at Huntimer. He worked on a farm until 1945 when they moved to Dell Rapids. He began working as a commissioned agent for Socony Mobil Oil Company and later purchased the business. In April 1981 he retired from running M. J. Bunkers Oil Company. His wife died Oct. 14, 1994.

He was a member of the Dell Rapids American Legion Post, Disabled American Veterans, Catholic Order of Foresters and St. Mary Catholic Church.

He is survived by three sons, Tim (Sandra) of Sioux Falls, Jeff (Linda) of Minneapolis and Jerry (Mary) of Sioux Falls; three daughters, Linda (Duane) Majeres of Huron and Jane (Craig) Stehly and Monica (Tom) Meyers, both of Mitchell; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Vincent (Phyllis) and Yvo (Stella), both of Dell Rapids, and Terry (Emily) of Minneapolis; and a sister, Lois (George) Schwebach of Dell Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers.

Memorials may be sent to St. Mary Catholic Church and School in Dell Rapids or the Avera McKennan Dougherty Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls.
