Boyd was born on November 17, 1918 at Flandreau, SD to William and Ada Babcock Bennett. He received his early education in country school and graduated from Egan High School in 1936. He entered the U.S. Army on June 25, 1941 and was discharged on November 6, 1945. Boyd returned to Flandreau and was married to Catherine Hetland on May 15, 1947 at Flandreau. They farmed southeast of Flandreau until 1970 and they moved to Pierre in 1971 where Boyd worked for the SD Department of Agriculture. They returned to Flandreau and he worked for the Big Sioux Water Works in Egan. His wife preceded him in death on April 2, 1982. Boyd moved to Egan until 1995 when he became a resident at Riverview Manor. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, American Legion, Democratic Party and former State Representative.

Boyd is survived by 3 sons: Bryan and his wife Sandy, Golden, CO; Craig and his wife, Kathy, Dayton, OR; Dale and his wife, Wendy, Sioux Falls; 7 grandchildren, 3 brothers: Norris, Sioux Falls, Mark, Sioux City, IA; Jim, Buena Vista, AR; 2 sisters: Lillian Tibbs, Ash Grove, MO; Hope Klitzke, Sioux Falls; and a very special friend, Dorothy Boehm, Pipestone, MN. He is preceded by his wife, Catherine, his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
