Cornelius "Lame Johnny" DONAHUE

Lame Johnny's Lone Grave Cemetery
Custer County,
South Dakota

Born Cornelius Donahue in Philadelphia in 1850, Outlaw Lame Johnny was buried under the cottonwood tree he was linched from in October of 1878. This is a photo of the rare picture of his long since gone grave (marked by the pile of rocks). The exact location along the Lame Johnny Creek near Hwy 79 just North of Buffalo Gap is unknown. This picture hangs in the Custer County Museum in Custer, SD along with a large piece of the tree and a shackle taken off his leg many years after his death.
