"Pioneer Day School Teacher Passes Away. Matthew Derig, who taught the Butte Creek Day school some twenty years ago, and later was transferred to a like position at Okreek, and for the past several years has taught other Day schools on this reservation, and who last fall was again transferred to the Okreek school, died last Saturday afternoon from an attack of pneumonia. His remains were taken to Flandreau, S.D., for burial. Mr. Derig entered the Indian service some twenty-seven years ago at Morris, Minnesota, and has been employed by the Indian Department continuously since. He leaves a wife and son to mourn his death. The son is at present an instructor in a school in Kansas City, Mo. The deceased was 67 years of age and was a faithful and appreciated employee in the Indian service, and had a wide acquaintance on the Rosebud reservation."
