C.T. Hegnes Rites are Held on Wednesday
Former Resident dies Saturday at Baltic: Had Business Here

Funeral service for Claus Theodore Hegnes, 75, of Baltic, former resident of Lincoln county and Canton were held Wednesday afternoon at the Baltic Lutheran Church. He died at his home there Wednesday.

Hegnes was born at Decorah, Ia. October 22, 1871 and came with his parents to a homestead 10 miles south of Canton two years later. He was married in Moe in 1898 to Mina Sogn.

For seven years following their marriage he owned and operated a general merchandise store at Moe and later worked in Canton for 3 ½ years. In 1908, he and the late K.E. Jacobson of Canton purchased the Dakota State Bank at Baltic. For 26 years, Hegnes was cashier of the bank resigning in 1933 because of poor health.

Following his resignation from active banking, Hegnes was associated with the Production Credit association in Sioux Falls. During his last years he was associated with the real estate and insurance business at Baltic. He was also active in civic affairs and for many years served as the chairman of the Minnehaha county Red Cross for the area outside of Sioux Falls. He was also chairman of the county bond drive and was interested in the food and clothing drive for European relief.

Mr. Hegnes had been in poor health since suffering from a stroke January 5.

Survivors include his widow; two children, Mrs. J. L. Stark, Kansas City, Missouri and Donald Hegnes, Minneapolis; two grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Helmer, and Matt, Mrs. Helmina Erp, Mrs. John M. Johnson, and Gretta Hegnes all of Canton. Olaf Hegnes and Mrs. Herbert Anderson, Alcester and Mrs. Alma Overseth, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Peter and Albert, and a sister Mrs. V.E. Berg.
