Cherrly Lee BIXLER JAMESON

Woodlawn - Sioux Falls Cemetery
Minnehaha County,
South Dakota

Cherryl (Sherry) Lee Jameson passed away peacefully on April 13, 2022, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers of Avera Hospice and Prince of Peace Long Term Care. Although she long suffered from Alzheimer’s, her sweet, gracious, and humorous disposition shined through up until she met her Lord.

A celebration of Sherry’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 19th at 11:00 AM at Spirit of Peace UCC Church. Sherry’s family invites all those who wish to stay for lunch immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association of South Dakota, The Great Plains Zoo and Spirit of Peace Church.

Sherry was born on April 4, 1936, in Corning, Iowa to Velma and William Bixler. Farm life was both difficult yet full of adventures spent with her elder brothers, Frank, Sam and Jim and her beloved animals. She rode her horse Chico to and from the rural schoolhouse each day and learned to become a very good golfer. She enjoyed the family’s beautiful Bixler Park, where they entertained and hosted dances and concerts for the surrounding community, including the Lawrence Welk Band. Just like her mother, Sherry had many creative talents and a great work ethic, and a knack to make beautiful surroundings from very little. Sherry’s homes were beautifully styled with tasteful additions of light, levity and warmth.

Sherry moved to Des Moines, Iowa to attend community college, where she worked as the executive secretary to the Editor of the Des Moines Register following graduation. It was while working as a cashier at the local diner, however, that would change her life forever when she locked eyes with the love of her life. Sherry was wed to Richard E. Jameson (Dick) on March 3, 1956, and theirs was truly a great love story. They were blessed to recently celebrate their 66th anniversary in March 2022.

Sherry and Dick made their way to Sioux Falls when Dick, employed as a mechanical engineer for the Trane HVAC Company, was offered to be regional manager. They happily settled and thrived in the Sioux Falls community for years to come. Sherry enjoyed supporting Dick as he became regional franchise owner and they also ran other businesses together, of which she was vice president. However, her greatest love and devotion was to their two children, Traci and John.

Sherry and Dick raised their children to know the comfort and blessings of faith in their lives. They were founding members of Crestwood United Church of Christ, and later involved in building Crestwood’s successor, Spirit of Peace UCC. The congregation was blessed by Sherry’s beautiful alter décor, her voice in the choir and unending volunteer activities. She was always ready and willing to give her support in the community. She started the Pets on Wheels program to share her joy of puppies and kittens with residents of area care facilities. And she and Dick also were involved in several grassroots community efforts, including the downtown Philips to the Falls project.

Sherry and Dick had many adventures, both together and with their family. They loved to spend time golfing, entertaining, and socializing at the Westward Ho Country Club and later with friends in Sun Lakes, Arizona. They went on numerous ski and snowmobiling trips along the way and enjoyed their lake time and water sports at Lake Madison and Lake Okoboji. They developed a passion for sailing and racing Hobie Cat Catamarans, which they later shared with their grandchildren. Sherry was Dick’s #1 crew! They loved travelling and exploring the world together, both in the U.S. and abroad. They shared their love and wonder of America’s beauty with their grandchildren by way of many RV adventures and national park excursions. Sherry was an avid sports fan and sat alongside Dick most evenings to root on their favorite teams while playing cards.

Sherry so loved her three grandchildren, Jamie Hylland Norrdin, Matthew Hylland and Makai Jameson. All of Sherry’s grandkids are left with the gift of cherished memories and life lessons from the most gracious, loving, and fun “Gramsey”.

Sherry’s life would not have been complete without the blessings of longtime close friendships and extended family to share in so many fun times, joy, and support.

Thankful to have shared her life and light are her husband, Dick; her daughter, Traci (Dick) Hylland (Sioux Falls); brother, Sammy (Claudean) Bixler (Gilbert, AZ); grandchildren, Jamie (Danny) Norrdin (Solana Beach, CA), Matt (Melisa) Hylland (Chicago, IL), and Makai Jameson (Phoenix, AZ); Dawn and Brody Scholten (Phoenix, AZ); young special friend Sofia Vargera (Sioux Falls); beloved dogs Ollie and Alfie; and many friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by her loving son, John Jameson; her parents and two brothers, Frank and Jim; her niece, Becky Bixler; and special friend, Joan Brown.
