JAMES KINGSLEY FAIRBANKS, Colman, S. D. Born in Conewango, N.Y., Jan. 28, 1832. He and his brother David went overland to California in1850, in company with one hundred and fifty others, with horses and wagons. They left Palmyra, Wis., April 1, and reached their destination August 13, after having had many exciting adventures. He remained in California about seven years at that time, and has spent several years there since. After a short experience in mining operations, he turned his attention to live stock and mercantile business, and as a friend says, "amassed a snug fortune." He was appointed Postmaster in Monti, Sonoma County in 1883 and held the office about two years. He has always been active in business; is now the owner of Coleman Town Site, (SD), and is dealing in real estate and shipping live stock to Sioux City, Chicago, and other points.
He married I, in Waupon, Wis., Feb. 2, 1858, Martha Chapin, who died Feb., 1873. She was daughter of Levi H, Chapin, born in Massachusetts.
Married II, June 20, 1875, Elizabeth Hobkirk, daughter of Robert Hobkirk. She died Sept. 27, 1875. No children.
Married III, May 13, 1879, Alice Josephine French, of Fox Lake Wis., daughter of Martin Lutteer and Amy Ford (Jencks) French, born Feb. 21, 1860.
