Esther R. Chraft
January 11, 1919 - April 12, 2018
Esther R. Chraft, 99, of Sioux Falls, SD died Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Southridge Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 18 at George Boom Funeral Home & Crematory, Sioux Falls, with burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 1:00 PM Wednesday until the time of the service.
Esther Rosy Twedt, daughter of Ole and Anna (Lavik) Twedt, was born January 11, 1919 in Hudson, SD. She grew up on a farm near Inwood, IA. Esther graduated from Canton (SD) High School in 1938.
Esther entered the U.S. Navy on December 2, 1943 in Canton, SD. She served during World War II. Esther was honorably discharged on February 18, 1946 at Great lakes, IL. She returned to Canton and worked as a cook and waitress in various restaurants.
Esther was united in marriage with Merle Chraft on March 1, 1961 in Hartington, NE. The couple made their home in Canton. Esther worked as a cook at the Good Samaritan Home in Canton until retiring in 1981. Esther and Merle moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1981.
Esther was a member of East Side Lutheran Church and the DAV Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading and crocheting.
Grateful for having shared her life are five children, Marv (Belle) Chick, Colorado Springs, CO, Leonard (Cheryl) Chick, Pierre, SD, Dale (Belma) Chick, Ankara, Turkey, Gloria Skinlo, Sioux Falls, SD, Ronald (Aaron) Chraft, Santa Fe, NM; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Merle, on March 12, 1996; a son, Glenn Chick; an infant daughter, Valerie; her parents; three brothers; and four sist
