Emmanuel “Manny” Gbegbe Christopher was born on December 17, 1997 in Nairobi, Kenya to Christopher and Blandina Yuyada. The family is originally from South Sudan but relocated to Nairobi, Kenya as refugees and settled there for a time, before immigrating to the United States in 2000. Sioux Falls, South Dakota is where he grew up and began his life. He was enrolled in the Youth Enrichment Services Head Start program to begin his educational journey. He attended Oscar Howe Elementary School, Memorial Middle School, and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He was passionate about sports from an early age. As a fierce competitor, he excelled in basketball and football.

He furthered his education at Dakota Wesleyan University where he continued to play football and graduated in 2020. He shined as a football player and was a leader on and off the field. Throughout his college years he was employed at the Original House of Pancake, Liberty Tax, and was most recently working at Eide Bailey. Manny brought his positive, uplifting spirit to his co-workers and was loved and adored by many at work. Additionally, he was pursuing a master’s degree in Business at Dakota Wesleyan University. Manny’s love for sports continued as he was a volunteer coach at his alma mater, Roosevelt High School. He had an immediate connection and left a positive impact on the players, coaches, and staff. He was friendly, funny, strong-willed and fearless to voice his opinions, whether popular or unpopular. Manny treated his family, friends, and especially the younger generation with love and respect. Many children looked up to him as a mentor and friend, which is why the news of his death has left us all broken, sad, and confused. Emmanuel died suddenly on January 24, 2021 at only 23 years of age, leaving us with many questions but no answers. We mourn Manny along with dreams of his potential.

He is survived by his grandmother, Loise Poggo; parents, Christopher and Blandina Yuyada; brothers, Patrick Christopher, Emmanuel Yuyada, and Denet (Abbey) Christopher; sisters, Poni Faith Christopher, Ludia Yuyada; many uncles, aunts, cousins, and an unborn nephew, Noah Wani Christopher. He did hear the gospel message of Jesus and knew how much Jesus loves him. We all are left without words to express how we feel at the loss of Emmanuel “Manny” Gbegbe.
We look to God for comfort and peace and are truly grateful to all of you who have supported this family at this very difficult time. Thank you for your prayers and kind words.

We know we will never see you here on earth again but have hope we will see you some day in God’s presence because of His love and mercies. Continue to pray for us all, and may we find comfort in God’s word and in each other’s kindness.
