Herbert C. Schauer
January 17, 1932 - June 09, 2021

Herbert “Herb” Schauer, 89, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and formerly of Aberdeen, South Dakota passed away on June 9, 2021, at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Sunday, June 13, 2021, at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Private burial services will be at the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Herbert Schauer, son of Rudolph and Emma (Opp) Schauer was born January 17, 1932, on a farm north of Roscoe, South Dakota. After school he worked for Roscoe Auto and then worked as a surveyor for Bannister Engineering Company in Edmunds County. He enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War and served his country from 1952 until earning his Honorable Discharge in 1956. After the service he worked as a machinist in California for a few years before returning to South Dakota. He was united in marriage to Helen Wenck on August 27, 1966, in Wilmot, South Dakota. Herb dedicated 35 years to the Railroad doing track maintenance. First for The Milwaukee Railroad and later for Burlington Northern after they merged.

Herb always had the greenest, best looking yard in the neighborhood and took great pride in his home. He spent many hours cleaning and polishing his cars, trucks, and vans. He enjoyed shooting pool, tinkering in his garage and going for drives in the country. He truly loved the scenic routes, roads, and bridges they took when they drove to Florida 23 times to visit Jerry. Herb and Helen visited every state aside from Alaska and Hawaii. His favorite pastime was watching his grand dog, Murphy. They did share a special bond.

Herb was a genuine, kind soul. Always full of wit, spunk, and character. He was great at one-liners and always had a smile on his face. He loved watching Wheel of Fortune, old westerns, Everybody Loves Raymond and the Weather Channel. He was always the Best Host and always had a good jar of pickles to share. He loved his ice cold Pepsi and Dr. Pepper along with his favorite Long John rolls from Milbank.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Helen of Sioux Falls; daughter, Leslie (Matt) Taylor of Oak Harbor, WA; sons, David (Patrice) Schauer of Littleton, CO, Jerry (Angel) Schauer of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Gary (Susie) Schauer of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and grand dog, Murphy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Mildred (Gale) Dieringer, Lester Schauer, and Angie (Roland) Haynes.
