Sgt. Sergei Joseph Hearst
December 03, 1987 - June 13, 2014

Sgt. Sergei J. Hearst was born December 3, 1987 in Perm, Russia; he is the son of Jack Hearst and Elaine Hearst.


He was raised in Sioux Falls, attended Sioux Falls Catholic Schools and graduated from O'Gorman High School.


Two weeks after he graduated he enlisted in U.S. Army and attended boot camp in Ft. Benning, GA. Sgt. Sergei Joseph Hearst, 26, died Friday, June 13, 2014 in Killeen, Texas. Hearst was assigned to Troop F, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, since April 2012. He began active-duty service in June 2007 as an infantryman and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2009 to June 2010.


Hearst's awards include two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge and Marksmanship Qualification Badge Sharpshooter with Rifle.


Grateful for having shared his life are: his wife, Clair Hearst and their son, John; his mother, Elaine Hearst, his father, Jack (Linda) Hearst; 1 brother, Brad (Sara) Hearst and their son, Dylan; 2 sisters, Reshma Hearst and Krystal Hearst; and maternal grandparents, Ed and Lorraine Baumann.


Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday with the family present at Heritage Funeral Home. A Memorial fund has been set up for Sergei's son John at the First National Bank in Sioux Falls.
