Donald T. Joyce
February 20, 1931 - December 06, 2020

Donald Joyce, 89, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, December 6, 2020 at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Donald Thomas Joyce was born February 20, 1931 in Parker, SD. He grew up and attended school in Parker. Don entered military service and served in the US Air Force from March 1, 1951 until receiving his honorable discharge on November 30, 1952. He later attended college for electronics where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree.

He married Phyllis Neuberger on May 26, 1953 in Canistota, SD. The couple lived in Sioux Falls where Don worked for IBM as a computer engineer for 35 years. His knowledge and skills learned from years of hard work allowed him to repair most anything and he was often asked to help with a faulty tool or appliance.

Don enjoyed being busy and when not making something in his workshop he could often be found helping to paint a relative’s house or at kid’s/grandkid’s events all over the Midwest. He even braved snowstorms to attend basketball games. He was competitive and known to express his opinions when watching a game (hard not to when you’re a Vikings fan) or playing a hand of Nuts.

For many years, Don and Phyllis attended “Mr. and Mrs.” dances at the Arkota ballroom with several other couples. Don was also a lifelong participant in sports and outdoor activities including camping, fishing and hunting. He bowled with Phyllis and played golf with friends well into 2020. He was generous and full of life experiences; sharing with his kids and grandkids to “not spend more than you make”, and was an excellent role model for his family.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Phyllis, of Sioux Falls; his children, Dennis (Lisa) Joyce of Jacksonville, FL, Nancy (Dr. Bruce) Keppen and Jill (Rob) Hazard, both of Sioux Falls, SD; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Robert Joyce and James Joyce, Jr.

Memorial services will begin 1:00 pm Friday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2200 S. Western Avenue. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to service time. A private interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Sanford Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice. They also ask that all people attending the funeral and visitation wear a face mask and maintain social distancing protocols.
