Death of John T. Bennett
John Taylor Bennett, a former well known citizen of Wyoming Valley, died at Flandreau, South Dakota, on May 29, 1904, aged 92 years, 10 months and 5 days. He was a son of Josiah and Sally Taylor Bennett and was born in Hanover. He was quite a noted carpenter and builder, and houses of his workmanship still stand in this valley. He, with his family, went West in 1859. He is survived by his wife, nee Henrietta Shiner, and several children. The Bennett family came to this valley about 1770. The first one was Ishmael Bennett and he was here in the time of the Indian raids and took part in those trying times. John Taylor Bennett in religion was a Methodist and in politics was a Republican. Although for many years away from his native valley he still took a lively interest in the affairs pertaining to Wilkes Barre and Luzerne County and entertained a hope that he would once more see the hills of Hanover before he died. The letters he occasionally sent for the Record were interesting reading. He was ill only a few days and generally enjoyed good health, and seemed to think that he would round out a century of earthly life, but he has gone the way of all the earth, and many will miss the kindly, broad-souled man.
