AN AGED COUPLE

LIVED HERE FOR MANY YEARS, NOW RESIDENTS OF THE WEST

Herewith are shown the portraits of Mr. and Mrs. John Taylor Bennett, who left Wilkes Barre many years ago to make a home for themselves and children in the West. They now reside in Flandereau, South Dakota. They are natives of Luzerne County, Mr. Bennett of Hanover, and Mrs. Bennett is a daughter of James Shiner of Sugarloaf. They were married in 1846. Mr. Bennett is a member of the Bennett family, noted in this valley in Revolutionary War days.

Mr. Bennett was born on the 24th of July 1811. Mrs. Bennett on the 6th of May, 1813. They prize the Record as it has been their family paper for many years.

Mr. Bennett while here was a carpenter and builder, and a number of the houses he built in this valley are still standing. He was building houses in Wilkes-Barre three score and ten years ago. He also built the Shoemaker brick house in Forty Fort, opposite the cemetery.

He, assisted by his brother, Josiah Bennett, and Joseph V. Robbins and William H. Hutson of Hutson Street, this city, built the first church ever built in Plymouth, the M.E. Church, that was afterwards moved to Forty Fort by Hon. John B. Smith.

These aged people are still quite well, and until lately lived on their little farm and did their own work.

Mr. Bennett still writes with a bold, firm hand. In a letter recently he says: “I will pen you a few lines and let you know that we are all well here, and will send you a postoffice money order to pay for our paper another year. We cannot get along without it. God bless you. We are likely to stop here for another eight or ten years, and maybe longer.” Well done, for people nearly a hundred years of age.
