Bert was born on May 19, 1916 at Flandreau, SD to Robert (Les) and Ruth Babcock Bennett. He graduated from Egan High School in 1934. Bert married Shirley Rudd on April 4, 1936 at Rock Rapids, Iowa. They started farming near Flandreau in 1943 and in 1948 they moved to a farm 3 miles south of Flandreau. They moved into Flandreau in the fall of 1977 and he did painting, wallpapering and carpentry for several years, retiring in 1990. Bert was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau Masonic Lodge #11 AF & AM, and a former Egan School Board member.

Bert is survived by his wife, Shirley, Flandreau; 2 sons: Richard, Schuyler, NE; Daniel and his wife, Dorine, Madison, SD; 1 daughter, Joan, and her husband, Kent Scofield, Flandreau; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: Harley, Flandreau; William, Elkton, SD; 2 sisters: Evelyn, Mrs. Lloyd Chamberlin, Rogers, AR; Donna Malone, Brandon, SD. He is preceded in death by on granddaughter, Teresa; his parents, and one brother, Robert.
