Raymond Hochstetter
September 19, 1923 - March 16, 2004

Ray was born Sept. 19, 1923 in Java, SD, the eighth of ten children to Fred and Elizabeth (Schneider) Hochstetter. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Java High School. Ray worked on the family farm before entering the Army Infantry in 1944. During service to his country in WWII, he served in the Pacific Theatre in the Philippines, Okinawa and Korea. Ray was serving in Okinawa at its invasion and fall. After leaving the service, Ray returned to Java to continue working on the family farm and then moved to Chicago to attend auctioneer school. Upon completion of auctioneer school, he moved to Aberdeen to work as an auctioneer and also opened a used furniture store. While living in Aberdeen he met his future wife. In 1951, Ray moved to Sioux Falls to work for Standard Oil. In June of 1952 he was united in marriage to Gladyth Maree Fegert in Lily, SD. In 1955, he began his career as a serviceman with Minnegasco in Sioux Falls, working there until his retirement in 1988. Ray and Gladyth had three children, a son who died at birth in 1959, a son Steven, born in 1961 and a daughter Mary, born in 1964. Ray continued to be active in his retirement, working part-time at Menards for seven years. Ray and Gladyth also traveled extensively, visiting their children and grandchildren and traveling to other parts of the United States. Ray was known for his dedication to his work, his high degree of integrity, and most of all, his love for his family. Those who had the privilege to know and love him will miss Ray. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Gladyth; his children, Steven (Sherri) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Mary (Mike) Ruebenson of Naperville, IL; six grandchildren, Garrett, Devon, and Shanna Hochstetter, and Jennifer, Ryan, and Lauren Ruebenson; three sisters, Erna Werre of Aberdeen, and Elsie (Allan) Ulmer and Irene (Jack) Christopher of the Minneapolis, MN area; three sisters-in-law, Betty Hochstetter of Brookings, Twila Hochstetter of Las Vegas, NV, and Miriam Beauvais of Phoenix, AZ; and one brother-in-law, Wallace (Joan) Fegert of Battle Lake, MN. The family of Raymond Hochstetter thanks you for your support and presence today. An invitation is extended to join them for refreshments and fellowship following the committal service.
