Thora was born January 31, 1902 in Skram, Denmark to Kristen and Anne Thompson Thorup. She was raised in Brovst, Denmark where she attended school. After she finished school, she worked in a general store where she framed pictures. She also performed in local plays and was an excellent vocalist. She married Marius Jensen on September 21, 1920 in Denmark. They came to the United States and started farming southeast of Flandreau until 1945 when they moved to a farm north of Egan. Her husband died in1965 and Thora continued to make her home on the farm for nine more years. In 1975 she moved into an apartment in Dell Rapids and entered Terrace Manor Nursing Home in 1982, where she had resided since. Thora enjoyed gardening, canning, and preparing delicious Danish meals for her family and many friends, as well as playing the drums in the "Kitchen" band at the nursing home.
Thora is survived by one daughter, Alice and her husband, Dave Chamley, Dell Rapids, SD; one son Svend, and his wife, Jean, Scottsdale, AZ; 5 grandchildren: Doug Chamley, Kim Stelzer, Scott Chamley, Tony Jensen, Ginrger Fissell; 15 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Karen Pedersen, Nykobing, Denmark. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marius, her parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
