Meint Eilers

Dell Rapids – Meint J. “Mike” Eilers, 83, former owner of Wagner Meat market, died Saturday, May 18, 1996, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Mr. Eilers was born April 12, 1913, in Craig, Iowa. The family moved to a farm northwest of Dell Rapids when he was 4, and he grew up and attended country school in the area. He farmed with his parents until his father’s death. He and his brother continued to farm the family farm until 1940 when he moved to a farm near Chester.

He married Otella Sorfonden on July 3, 1947, in Dell Rapids, and they lived there. He worked at the Wagner Meat Market for 11 years, owing it for six of them. He then worked for Dell Rapids Hospital for a short time and then started working for Kahler Funeral Home and Kahler Furniture Store in 1970.

Mr. Eilers was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, the Dell Rapids senior Citizens Center, and the Pheasant Horse Shoe League in Madison.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Terry (Connie) Klein of Dell Rapids; a stepson, Richard Sorfonden of Redfield, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Duane (Beverly) Poppen of Madison; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: Alvin of Sun Lake, Ariz., and Raymond of Rapid City; and five sisters: Norma Glinski of Kenosha, Wis.; Velda Brandt of Rapids City; Mrs. Joe (Verlan) Ferrara of Baton Rouge, La.; Mrs. Orville (Laura) Kirkegaard of Trent; and Mrs. Ray (Martha) Minters of Hermistion, Ore.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, with burial in St. Olaf Cemetery, Baltic.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today at Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids, with the family present from 7 – 8 p.m.
