DeWitt Clinton ARMS

Union - Flandreau Cemetery
Moody County,
South Dakota

Dewitt married Honor Smith. They were the parents of Philena (Lena), Roy, Justus, Sarah, Jennie, Francis, & Delos.

In April, 1878, DeWitt. C. Arms moved his family to Moody County, SD. Besides being a minister, Rev. Arms always farmed in order to make a living for his family. Even then as now, the difficulty of the minister's salary was a problem and he often told the story of receiving 50 cents and one sack of oats for one year of ministry. In 1899, the pastor's salary was raised to $60 per year.

One Sunday he drove his family to Flandreau in a wagon without spring seats, and waited while the Indians held their worship hour in the Episcopal Church. When they finished, the whites held their religious services.

On October 17, 1920, Rev. Arms preached his farewell sermon to the Riverview church of Moody county, SD. On Thanksgiving day in 1922, two years after his farewell sermon, this contryside bade goodby to Rev. Arms. His death was caused by shock and injury resulting from an automobile accident in loose gravel.
