Where Edward was actually born is only conjecture, but it is known he was born aboard the ship the family sailed on from Ireland. Family history tells us the ship was waiting to dock, and had been quarantined in Atlantic water off Newfoundland because of an epidemic of smallpox. Edward stated on both the 1850 and 1860 federal Census' be was born in Canada. The 1850 Federal census for Monday Creek Tswp., Perry Co., Ohio taken on December 2nd lists Edward with Julia and their first three children as family number 76 in dwelling number 76. Living next door to them were his parents, Thomas and Judith Grogan and the rest of Edward's siblings. The 1860 Federal census for Monday Creek Tswp., Perry Co., Ohio taken on July 23, shows Edward with Julia and their family living in Dwelling 1028 and listed as family 1005 on page 144. Family 1006 living next to them was Judith Grogan, his mother and Patrick and Elizabeth (Grogan) Purcell. By the time of the 1870 census they had removed from Ohio and settled in Indiana. Edward was "the last Irishman," conceived in Ireland, born in passage to America. In tumult of 19th century Ireland, he and fellow immigrants were probably unhappy British subjects as well as prime candidates for relocation away, if not deportation, from Ireland before becoming IRA recruits. New World entry was via St. Lawrence River of Canada. Edward's parents, Thomas and Judith, as below, entered U.S. at Lockport, NY, near Niagara, most likely in 1824. Third son, James Raymond, born there in 1825. That may account for why his middle name, seemingly unusual for Irish families, was used as the first name in later generations. Burial locations for Edward's parents, Thomas Grogan and wife, Judith Bowe, are in a Catholic cemetery, in Junction City, Ohio, 45 miles east southeast of Columbus, Ohio; more specifically, 20 miles east of Lancaster.
