Partial Obituary for Halvor from Mt. Vernon News on March 9, 1923 Obituary. Old Soldier and Respected Citizen Called to Reward. Halvor Olson was born in LaSalle County, Ill, March 3, 1844 and died at his home in Mt. Vernon, SD, March 2, 1923, lacking one day of being 79 years old. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and always remained a faithful member of that church to the last. He was always generous and helpful. In the early days when the question of church building came to the early settlers he together with a few others gave of his property and helped erect the Victor church, the first Lutheran home of worship in the community. Later, after retiring from the farm, he helped build the Lutheran church in Mt. Vernon. He encouraged and supported the church both by his regular attendance and his financial help. But he was just as loyal to his country. As a lad of 18 years he eagerly responded to the call during the Civil War and enlisted in the 82nd regiment of the Illinois Infantry. He remained in service until the close of the war in 1865. He took part in 18 hard battles, including Gettyburg and those in connection with Sherman's march to the sea. In the year 1866, Mr. Olson moved from LaSalle county to Lee, DeKalb county, Ill. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Johnson on July 1, 1869. After thirteen years of residency in Lee, Ill., Mr. Olson decided upon a change of location. In 1882 they moved to South Dakota homesteading about 8 miles northwest of Mt. Vernon. Here the toil and hardships of pioneer life were duly met. In 1900 Mr. and Mrs. Olson moved to Mt. Vernon to spend their remaining years in ease and quietude. Here Mr. Olson after a very brief illness passed away.
