Brandon- Dr. John M. Hermanson, age 89, died on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Monday, October 26, 2009 at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church in rural Valley Springs. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 25, at George Boom Funeral Chapel in Brandon with the family present to greet friends and family from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, a brief prayer service will be held at 7:30 PM.
John Maurice Hermanson was born May 21, 1920 in Dell Rapids, South Dakota to parents John and Alice (Paulson) Hermanson. John spent his youth in Dell Rapids and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1937. After high school John continued his education at Augustana College in Sioux Falls and graduated from South Dakota State University in 1942. He earned his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska in 1945. John completed his residency at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. After his residency, John served his country in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Nara, Japan. He returned home in 1947.
On June 14, 1945 John was united in marriage to Dorothy Zuelow. This union blessed John and Dorothy with their two daughters and one son. On April 2, 1978, John married Gail (Gulseth) Letcher at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church in rural Valley Springs.
John served the local community for many years as a General Practitioner in Valley Springs, SD, beginning in 1948. He in later years joined the Luverne Medical Center before retiring in the late 80's. John also practiced medicine in San Diego, CA. John "Doc" was named the second inductee into the Brandon Valley Athletic Hall of Fame. For more than thirty years he was actively involved with both students and adults in the school system, giving hundreds of physicals to school athletics, bus drivers, Boys and Girls State participants and Valley Springs Legion baseball players. He served as team physician; diagnosing, treating injuries and responding to medical situations. Doc was one of those special physicians who delivered many babies and made home visits at all hours of the day. His commitment to the needs of others brought about challenges beyond patient care such as house visits in the dead of winter, getting stuck in snow drifts and taking his snowmobile to the Luverne hospital to make rounds during blizzard conditions.
John was one of the founders of the Tri-State Hospital in Valley Springs and was also part of the physician staff for both of the Sioux Falls hospitals. He was a life member of the South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians, Valley Springs Legion and the El Riad Shrine. He was a member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Gail, Brandon, SD, two daughters; Diane Hermanson of Mexico City, MX and Denise (John) Frugoni, San Diego, CA, one son; John, Philadelphia, PA, one step-son Gregg (Deborah) Letcher, Brandon, SD, and sister, Mary Odland, Luverne, MN, seven grandchildren; Karen, Pati, Ana Karla, Brian, Erika, John Robert and Stacey, one niece Deb; four nephews D. Mark, David, Paul and Steven; two step-grandchildren Austin and Aden; and seven great grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice.
