James Austin Greer was born at Gessie, IN on Feb. 19, 1909, the son of George Henry and Mary Jane (Richardson) Greer. In 1910 he migrated, with his family, to Lincoln County, SD. He attended rural school and grew up in Lincoln County. On Apr. 26, 1934 he was united in marriage to Grace Urben at Beresford. Following their marriage they farmed northeast of Beresford and in 1940 moved to their farm southwest of Lennox where he continued farming until his retirement. His wife preceded him in death on Aug. 18, 1986. He continued to make his home on the farm until May 26 of 1999, when he entered the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Robert Vernon in 1938; three sister: Lela Ross, Lucille Wedge and Marie Diersman. Austin died peacefully at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, Jun. 15, 1999, as the result of cancer. He attained the age of 90 years, three months and 26 days. Grateful for having shared his life are his five children and their spouses: Dean and Lois Greer of Bella Vista, AK, Faye and Donald Ostlund of Sioux Falls, Diane and Jon Bjordal of Centerville, Carol and Harold Geist of Valley Springs, and Douglas and Jan Greer of Hill City; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers: Vern Greer of Hill City and Wayne Greer of Anniston, AL; three sisters: Georgia Roseberry of Hill City, Fern McLaughlin of Dakota City, NE and Mary Boehlke of Richfield,MN.
