Funeral services for John L. Ferguson, 82, were held in the Trent Baptist Church on Friday, May 29 with the Rev. Frank Fagerburg officiating. Mr. Ferguson died on the Royal C. Johnson Veterans' hospital in Sioux Falls Tuesday evening, May 26 of a cerebral hemorrhage and stroke. He had been ill one week.

Pallbearers were Leonard Bauck, Alick Swiden, Leonard Ferguson, Albert Huewe, David Neuroth and Lester Larson. The Trent quartet and Floyd Whipkey Jr., provided the music. Interment took place in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

John L. Ferguson was born on February 9, 1877 to Joseph and Catherine Ferguson in Ida Grove, Iowa, and was married Helen Lyons on December 9, 1913 in Baltic, S.D. They lived 9 years in Ida Grove and have resided in Trent since 1886. Mr. Ferguson farmed for some years and more recently had a dray line and did excavation work.

He belonged to Company K, South Dakota Regiment in the Spanish American War and participated in all 19 battles of the Philippine Insurrection. He was the last survivor in Moody County. He was discharged October 5, 1899 with honors.

Survivors include his widow, two sons, Vincent, LeMars, Ia.; William, Kenwick, Ia.; one daughter Ruby Breitkreutz, Janesville, Wis.; and two grandsons, Terry and Tom Ferguson, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a sister, Mirilda Brediven, Los Angeles and two brothers, Ed, Westby, Mont., and Frank, Sioux Falls. A son, Glenn preceded him in death in 1954.

Attending the services from away were Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Lyons, Mrs. Joe Lyons, Newell; Mr. and Mrs. O. Driscoll, Belle Fourche; Ms. Viola Lale and Mrs. Violet Price, Spearfish; Mr. and Mrs. Dave Ferguson, Minneapolis; Mrs. E. Ferguson, son and daughter of Westby, Mont; Walter Lyons, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rympka, Rapids City; Frank Ferguson and Family, Madison; Mr. and Mrs. S. Arenson, Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Floden, Zeona; Mrs. J.J. Neuroth and family, Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. C. Rassmussen, Crocker.
