Bert 1871 - 1942
Bertha 1879 - 1960

Bert, the oldest son of Johannes and Brita Yttreness, was born in 1870 in Albert Lea, Minn., where they first lived after coming to this country. In 1872 they came to a claim in Norway township. Once when Bert was five years old he was out in the tall grass with his mother and sister Marie when Brita noticed a gray wolf sneaking up on her son. She took the stick she was carring and with a cry pointed it at the wolf as if it were a gun, and the wolf took off in fright. Another time Bert was rescued from a well into which he had fallen. His sister, who was unable as yet to talk, realized the predicament he was in and ran to the house to get her mother. Bert married a neighbor girl, Bertha Rommereim, daughter of A. J. Rommereim, in 1898. They stayed on the Yttreness home place after their marriage. Their children were Jessie, Alvin, and Lucille. Jesse married Alma Eide and they resided in Lincoln County, Wessington Springs, and Sioux Falls. Their children were Dale, of Ukiah, Calif.; Velma (Mrs. Glen Martin) of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Gary of Sioux Falls. Lucille married Alex Crooley. He was killed in an airplane accident during World War II. She married Phil Moore of Washington, Kan. They had one son Tony. Bert was a livestock man and shipped many cattle to Chicago and sold hogs to buyers in Beresford. He was in¬strumental in beginning the Federal Land Bank of Beresford. Between 1912 and 1914 they built a large home, hog house and barn. Bert died in 1942 and Bertha some years later at her home to which she had moved in Beresford.
