1851 - 1926
Andrew J. Rommereim was born on Feb. 7, 1851, in Bergen, Norway, to Johannes and Brita Rommereim. When Andrew reached the age of 21 he came by boat to America. He settled in Fillmore County in Minnesota and worked on farms for three to four years. Four years later he returned to Norway and married Anna Sjurson Dyrkollbotten on May 1, 1875, in Bergen. On Dec. 26, 1875, their first child was born (Andrew A.) and later they left Norway for America and arrived at Lee County, Ill., where they lived for 12 years. Five other children were born there: Charles, Bertha, Belle, Celia, and Ella. Andrew and Anna then started for Dakota Territory to buy a farm and build a home of their own. They settled in Lincoln County near Beresford. They stayed with Andrew's brother John Rommereim. There were no roads so the fami¬ly traveled cross country to the brother's home. The two families lived together for three or four months and Andrew then bought a quarter section west of John's land for $16.00 an acre (southeast quarter 12-96-50). By June, the house was ready to move into. Andrew moved his family into their new home on their own farm. Later Andrew bought 80 acres south of their home farm for the sum of $200.00 (south quarter, northeast quarter, 13-96-50l, Tom Ulrickson was paid $1.00 an acre for break¬ing sod on the 80. Andrew's family grew to 13 with the birth of seven more children: Alma, Ole (1890-1907), Morton, May (1887-1908), John, Hilda, and John C., and they cared for one foster son, Olaf Loney. Andrew was interested in politics and he served in the State House of Representatives for Lincoln County in the years 1911 to 1914. Andrew and Anna moved from their farm home in 1921 to Beresford where they purchased a house (also in Lincoln County). On Feb 1, 1926 Andrew passed away and Anna continued to live in her home with her daughter, Belle Toft, to care for her. Anna passed away on Jan 2, 1943. Andrew and Anna are buried at the Romsdal Cemetery. (Source: The History of Lincoln County, SD 1985, page 641)
