Judy Payfer, 63, of Tea, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at Avera McKennan Hospice in Sioux Falls. Judy Joan Meyers, daughter of Floyd and Ruth (Howland) Meyers, was born August 29, 1941 in Lake Preston, SD. As a child she moved with her family to a farm near DeSmet, SD and grew up there. Judy graduated from DeSmet High School in 1959 and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Huron (SD) College in 1963. Judy moved to Sioux Falls, SD and taught school there for several years. She married Larry Kothe in 1963. Judy later worked in the Economic Assistance Division of the South Dakota Department of Social Services. Judy married William Payfer in Sioux Falls on July 3, 1985. The couple lived in Sioux Falls before moving to Tea, SD in 1989. Judy retired in 2003 after 24 years of service with the Department of Social Services. Following retirement, Judy and Bill enjoyed traveling together. Judy was diagnosed with ALS in February of 2003. Judy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Tea, where she was active in Altar Guild, Mary Circle and was past secretary of WELCA. She was a member and past-president of the Tea Lions Club. Judy was a former member and Past Senior Regent of the Women of the Moose. In addition, she was a member of the Teapot Day Committee. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Bill; one daughter, Stephanie Kothe, Hempstead, NY; one son, Derek Kothe, his wife, Kathryn and their children, Chelsea, Makayla and Allison, Rapid City, SD; one step-son, Brian Payfer, Garretson, SD; three sisters, Marvis Jenner and her husband, Roger, Brookings, SD, Marvel Turner and her husband, Tom, Foley, MO, Pat Baumberger and her husband, Gary, Sturgis, SD; her ex-husband, Larry Kothe and his wife, DiAnn, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends. Judy was preceded in death by her parents.
