Gerhard was born to Lubbert and Johanna (Menninga) Mechels. He attended rural school and grew to manhood in Germany. Left Germany via Bremen on 7 July 1923 on ship "Seydlitz". Trip apparently took 12 days. Received US citizenship May 11, 1931 (age 32) at Lincoln County, SD. Cert. #3342821, Petition #545. Attended Schweing Auto School in Kansas City, Mo. in 1925. Gerhard married Sophie Marie Fischer on Jan. 26, 1927 at Delaware Church, Lennox, SD.
