Roger Wells Barnes, son of Ben and Alvida (Boysen) Barnes, was born November 20, 1936 at Tea, SD. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up and attended school in the area. He graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1954. He worked at a bank in Sioux Falls, SD until entering the U.S. Navy. Following his honorable discharge, he moved to Yankton, SD and was employed at the State Hospital. Roger was united in marriage with Darlene Howard in 1958 in Luverne, MN. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1958. He began working with the South Dakota State Penitentiary. He retired in 1992 after 37 years of service. In his retirement he loved riding his bike, spending time with his grandchildren and exercising. Roger attended AA for 33 years and was privileged to help many people with their challenges with alcohol dependency. Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Steven J. Barnes and his children, Stephanie, Traci and Jesse, Salem, OR, Allen J. Barnes, his wife, Sherrie and their children, Krista, James, Cassandra and Nina, Yankton, SD, Tamera L. Barnes and her daughter, Tiana Rochelle (Nana), Sioux Falls, SD, Randy Wells Barnes, his wife, Tammy and their children, Rachel and Eric, Mesa, AZ, and Tricia A. Smith, her husband, Forest and their daughter, Erin (Ernie), Humboldt, SD; two sisters, Pat Lambert and her husband, Bill, Mert Olson and her husband, Dale, Flandreau, SD; a brother, Carroll Barnes and his wife, Corinne, Sioux Falls, SD; 14 nieces; 10 nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Duane; and two sisters, Leona and Betty.
